This is a bitter sweet moment as we bid farewell to our pastor and friend Rev'd. Dr. Annette Brownlee. What an incredible journey it has been for her here at St. Paul's, for almost fifteen years. It has truly been an honour for our congregation to witness Annette's faith, dedication, and strong commitment in sharing her love of Christ with others in an exemplary fashion. These are just a few of her exceptional highlights. Her journey started with us in (2008) as an Associate Priest, our Pastor and friend. On Sunday mornings our congregation had the pleasure of hearing Annette preach. She has graced us with her ability to communicate the Gospel message in a unique and exuberant style that is all her own – with uplifting sermons that encourage and motivate us to use the word of God to guide us in our daily lives. In addition to this duty, she supported the pastoral care visitation. I can personally attest to her sincere and authentic nature in providing pastoral care and reaching out in friendship. I recall a time when I had knee surgery and while hospitalized Annette visited me. What touched me deeply was she not only prayed for my healing, but included my roommate in the prayer session, for someone whom she had never met. You're awesome Annette. Annette has served as the Chaplain of Wycliffe College, Professor of Pastoral Theology and Director of Field Education. She has a genuine warmth, compassion, and positive attitude that extends beyond the doors of St. Paul's. Our church has been blessed by wonderful students sent our way via Rev. Annette. These include Fr. Theadore and Donethia Hunt and we at St. Paul's are very much aware and appreciative of their contributions to our church. Currently Fr. Theadore is the Incumbent at St. Stephen's Downsview. And most recently we've enjoyed the additions of Carol Shih and Rajini Lyman. Carol has recently been ordained as Deacon and will be serving at St. Timothy's Anglican Church, North Toronto effective June 1. And Rajini has recently been accepted as a Postulant (an applicant for holy orders) in the Diocese of Toronto. I reached out to Fr. Theadore, Carol and Rajini and here are their reflections on their time with Annette. Fr. Theadore Hunt: "I felt very welcomed here at St. Paul's and do appreciate Rev'd. Annette's pastoral sensitivity and keen instincts in what Donethia and I needed at the time, and we have maintained a beautiful friendship over the years". The Rev'd Carol Shih: "Rev'd. Annette Brownlee was my supervisor as Chaplain in the Wycliffe Founders' Chapel and, more importantly, my precious friend. She gave me much support and guidance not only for the Chapel but also for living and life. She listened to, encouraged, comforted, navigated, and loved me. She also taught me English slang. I cherished our time together. I cannot say it in just a few words but want you to know you are my very precious friend and a remarkable person in my life. Annette, in the way God leads, may you continue blessing others as you have always done". Rajini Lyman: "Rev'd. Annette is one of the professors who helped me the most in my theological studies at Wycliffe and in my spiritual discernment. She is a great blessing not only to me but to many students. She goes over and beyond to assist her students. She encouraged me to focus on my Master of Divinity in place of Master of Theological Studies. Under her direction I learned how to do pastoral care in the proper manner. Now that I have been chosen as a Postulant, I am looking at her as someone whom God sent to fulfill His will in my life. She is loving, caring and very helpful to all the students at Wycliffe. I wish her well." In conclusion, we have been truly blessed to have Annette serve as our pastor, priest, and friend for almost 15 wonderful years. She has been a bright and effervescent light that has shined so brightly, along with her radiant and beautiful smile!! She has left an indelible mark. We are genuinely sorry to see her go. She is truly one of a kind and will be dearly missed. On behalf of St. Paul's, we wish her all the very best in her retirement and future endeavours. May God continue to bless you, Annette. The Lord is Risen. He is Risen indeed. Happy Easter!
A Service of Gratitude and Appreciation -Fr. Dean Mercer Nearly fifteen years ago in September, 2008, The Rev’d Dr. Annette Brownlee joined us as Associate Priest at St. Paul’s. She has served as a dedicated priest, preacher, pastor and friend, and has done so with grace and great kindness. As chaplain at Wycliffe College and Professor of Pastoral Theology and Director of Field Education, not only have we been the beneficiaries of wonderful students she sent our way, but also from her travels and scholarship. One example was her visit to Le Chambon, France, and her study of Pastor Andre Trocme who bravely defied the Nazis in WWII and, by his leadership and the courage of the people, hid and saved over 2000 Jews who ran for their lives to Le Chambon. This, Annette taught us, is the power of God’s word and presence at work in our life together, able to transform our lives for the sake of the world. (Incidentally, and as she never stops reminding me, it was Annette who introduced us to Fr. Theadore and Donethia Hunt. She’s still angling for her head-hunter fee. She still hasn’t received it, because for obvious reasons I kept putting her off. “Next year,” I promised. “Next year.”) So join us at St. Paul’s next Saturday, May 27, at 7.00 p.m. for an evening of beautiful music with the Agincourt Salvation Army Brass Band and of heartfelt thanks and appreciation for a dear pastor and priest. A Service Honoring Annette Brownlee and Supporting our New Friends - Saturday, May 27 - featuring the Salvation Army Brass of the Salvation Army Agincourt Community Church. Tickets: Adults: $15; Families: $25; Children 12 and under free. Join us for a wonderful concert and a very special evening honoring The Rev’d Dr. Annette Brownlee. All proceeds will go to our Refugee sponsorship program. The Feast of Pentecost - Sunday, May 28 - with the Pans leading at 9.15 am, Annette preaching, and the return of U4(ia) - the next generation! A Prayer for Mother’s Day Loving God, You have loved us with an everlasting love (Jer 31:3). You have loved us even more as a mother loved her child. Today, we give you thanks and praise for the gift of mothers. We pray for the mothers-to-be, who are just beginning to be the bearers of new life in them, may they welcome their forthcoming child with loving anticipation and joy. We pray for the young mothers, may they cherish their child with tender care and unconditional love. We pray for the mothers who are separated from their children because of war, poverty, conflict, violence and for any other reasons. Comfort them, strengthen their hope, and let them feel your loving embrace that wipes every tear away. We pray for all Mother-figures, those who have loved, surrounded and shaped us with motherly care and compassion. We especially pray for our own mothers who have nurtured and cared for us. Their sacrifices and care gave us a glimpse of the extent of your love for us. Thank you for them. Grant health, blessings, and well-being for those our mothers who are still alive. We also remember those mothers who are no longer with us. While they live forever in our hearts and memory grant them eternal rest and reward of their labours. Amen. ITEMS by Fr. Dean *A bad cold knocked out the editor on Sunday, but better late than never for the news because it was a great week at St. Paul’s. *On Friday morning, a lovely wedding for Pauline and Lascelles. Saturday morning marked the glorious homecoming for Lance Bloomfield and, fittingly, a day to pay tribute to the faithfulness and dedication of his wife and family. In both cases it was moving for me to watch the parish offering its full support, long before and long after each occasion. *On Saturday night was the African Sounds of Praise service, hosted by the three parishes of Nativity Malvern, St. George Yonge Street, and St. Paul L’Amoreaux. In all three congregations we have new friends from the African diaspora. For its own sake, an Easter festival of praise with an African accent was planned. But also, a chance for us to see and explore what opportunities the Lord may be opening, individually and together. It was a thrilling evening, with wonderful singing, dancing, testimonies and preaching. As a first effort, I thought it was realistic to expect about 90 people. Over 120 came, and together we experienced the joy of Africa and the hope for what’s to come. Specifically, at St. Paul’s this has already flowered in the West Indian/African Dance and Movement program - who performed in spectacular style on Saturday night - and the continuation of the monthly Immigrant Support Program renamed in loving memory of Timothy and Tervor Adzua seeking to build on their legacy of kindness and service to new immigrants. And together, the three congregations are committed to two more African Praise services in the other two churches with thoughts already turning about the formation of an African Diaspora Choir. We wait and see where the Lord will lead. *On Sunday, a happy morning as the parish welcomed the newly weds and marked a very special birthday. *And a glorious climax at the Cathedral for the ordination to the diaconate of Carol Shih, which can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrvbecwSSJE Happily, she will be attending and participating at St. Paul’s at 9.15 a.m. and 11.15 a.m. this coming Sunday, May 7. *And once you’ve finished that video, here’s another one to enjoy - a well done recording of last weekend’s Easter Bajanai by our Tamil Congregation, : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NE7y3qDEygA With these notable events in the month to come: *Maytime Melodies, our annual springtime parish recital, this Saturday, May 6, at 6.30 pm. Admission by donation. All proceeds to the Outreach Program. *The visit of The Rev’d Carol Shih next Sunday, May 7. *Mother’s Day, May 14, Rajini Lyman preaching. *Praise on Steel City wide pan concert, Saturday May 20, at the Malvern Christian Assembly, 6705 Sheppard Avenue, East.
