Thank you for your Faithful Gifts and Offerings - St. Paul’s is a strong parish and remained so throughout 2022 due to everyone’s faithful support at a time when never has it been more important. Gifts can be dropped off at the church or sent by mail. Kindly ensure that your name and envelope number is included. Or, members may wish to sign up for the Pre-Authorized Giving Program (contact the office). Members who use online banking can now make E-transfers (instructions here: www.stpl.ca/give.html). Gifts can also be made at our website through CanadaHelps: www.stpl.ca/give.html NOTE: Of the various means for online giving, we recommend The Pre-Authorized Giving Program. It is regular, matching the regular responsibilities of the parish, and once initiated all it takes is a phone call or quick e-mail note to increase, decrease, or cancel the donation. The monthly amount is withdrawn on the 20th of each month, and the cost to the church is 50 cents per transaction, irrespective of the amount of the gift. This makes the PAG the most economical of all methods of giving. Contact - The clergy of St. Paul’s are permitted once again to visit in homes. Don’t hesitate to call or write. by Fr. Dean+ During Covid at St. Paul’s we offered as many of the services and kept going as much of the program as regulations and safety guidelines permitted. And as the guidelines were relaxed last Easter, we set our eyes on restarting the six Sunday services and as much of our in-person activity as soon as possible, which began taking effect on the second Sunday of September. Since then we have taken cues from our anniversary speaker, The Rev’d Dr. Ephraim Radner, and from a study on the effects of Covid in The Episcopal Church by David Goodhew (https://covenant.livingchurch.org/2022/12/16/facing-episcopal-church-decline-after-covid/): *That the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ serves as the fuel and anchor for our reopening and rebuilding - the vision of life as God has intended for us and for the world. *That parishes who intend to grow tend to grow. An average parish sees a decline each year of about 10% due to ordinary attrition. Parishes who remain stable or grow are receiving new members of 10% or more. This made Covid especially hard. While attrition was about the same as usual, our ability to reach out was severely curtailed. Nevertheless, we’ve been encouraged because of the opportunities which have emerged: for family ministry, for a doubling of our community basketball program, for outreach to the African communities (and an interest which remains lively in reaching out to the Indigenous Community), for our new West Indian/African Dance program, and for a new outreach to young adults at a Saturday study that has added to its numbers each time it has met. *That we need a multi-year plan for the post-pandemic period. Important to this will be bold but realistic milestones for the first, third and fifth years. Back to Church Sunday, the last Sunday of September, is probably as good a time as any to frame the annual plans. And as David Goodhew suggested, he recommends: “I'd put work with children and families at the top of the list.” *Church closures must not distract us from the need for church planting. While there will be church closures, David Goodhew insists that this “should not distract us from the urgent need for church planting — notably in areas of expanding population, new housing, and ethnic diversification.” So as we always have, and with a proven record of taking risks and acting on new opportunities for Christian mission, we keep our eyes open. As Fr. Ephraim Radner encouraged us on Anniversary Sunday, we do not see this is as a time to start from scratch. Rather, post-Covid we using our pre-Covid schedule as our planning guide in order to restore the foundation of parish ministry: prayer, the sacraments, trustworthy preaching and teaching, care of each other, and reaching out boldly and cheerfully with the Good News of the Gospel and with hands open and willing to serve. Two final words. First, the recommended annual planning could be formalized, similar to what we did with the Renaissance 100 program with a committee who had several large goals and for several years planned and reviewed. It served us very well in finding ways to reach out in the community and to ensure that there are opportunities in the parish to understand and enter the Christian faith and life. The Corporation and Parish council could take time, say in early October, to evaluate the whole program, to review new initiatives, and to make suggestions for the year to come. This would keep us realistic, but I expect that it will also prove encouraging. For instance, even though financial support has remained strong (around 90% of the pre-Covid level in 2022) it is unrealistic to expect the level of in-person participation (i.e., attendance on Sundays) to return to the pre-Covid levels in one year. The Covid cloud still hangs over us. But 60% by Back to Church Sunday 2023, and a 10% increase in the succeeding four years is a healthy and realistic goal for welcoming those who return and those who are new. Secondly, since the beginning of October, it has been a very full season, not only with the challenge of reopening and restarting much that has been in hiatus for most of three years. There have also been staffing and program changes - the recruitment for, and development of our Family Ministry and new Office Manager positions, the overhaul of our phone and wireless system, and now another change upcoming (below). That said, we’re progressing well in all these areas with a strong foundation for the days ahead. In all of this I remain convinced that it is for others to be discouraged. For the sake of Jesus Christ, and for the sake of the world God loves, the Lord has given us too much to do! ************* Thank you, Annette The Rev’d Dr. Annette Brownlee is retiring at Wycliffe College this year and, with that change, will be stepping back at St. Paul’s as of Pentecost Sunday, May 28. S.P.Y. - St. Paul’s Youth - Friday nights at 7 pm. Contact Sarah for more information: splcyouthministry@gmail.com.
